The clock had just struck noon when the door opened and two masked men walked in to the office, one armed with a handgun in each hand and the other with only one lethal weapon. My customer and I didn’t have time to determine whether they were revolving or semi-automatic. We just felt the cold steel on the sides of our heads as we lay on the ground, having responded to their commands to “hit the ground, no sound!”

As we lay prostrate on the floor of my office, I trembled with fear as they barked questions asking “where’s the money?” I complied by keeping my head face down and guiding them to “the desk with the drawer in the middle, pull it out and you’ll find the money.” But that was not believed so one of the perpetrators came to me again and jammed the cold steel of the gun into the back of my skull where it attaches to my neck, and screamed, “where’s the f...ing money?”
I answered, being careful to not move my head, “it‘s exactly where I told you, at the desk where I was sitting, in the pencil drawer that’s in the middle of the desk. The money is there” He left me for a moment and I could hear him rummage through that drawer and the others in the desk, swearing and becoming increasingly agitated as he did so.
And then he returned to me, placed his foot on my back, stuck the gun into my neck, and barked into my ear, “if you don’t fess up, I’m gonna put you on ice today.” And I prayed, a short prayer, asking for protection and calm. And I was granted both. I’m sure of it. Because my ceaseless shuddering, panic and confusion stopped immediately. I experienced a clarity of mind and voice that that was unmistakable and unprecedented.
And I was able to state with unequivocal conviction and persuasiveness, “I’ve told you where it is. Why am I going to lie to you? You can take whatever you want; you can take my watch, my wallet, the computers, whatever you choose. If you check the receipt book, you’ll see that I’m giving you everything I have.”
With that, the one guy said to the other, ”I believe that’s it. Let’s get outta here.” And they left.
They left my customer and me, alive. It was a harrowing experience that forever changed my appreciation for the pivotal importance and value of the ability to sell, influence and persuade.
