Practice the Art of Business

How would you like to think about your life as a laboratory in which, over time, you can test one hypothesis after another? That's precisely what is often done. In keeping with that concept, I have examined and organized my personal results and observations into usable principles that can accelerate the pace of success for aspiring entrepreneurs, business owners and leaders.

One such example of an experiment that has resulted in great rewards is the one I describe as practicing the 'art' of business.

As I have reflected on the pleasant sensations I have had when encountering beautiful art such as paintings, music, sculpture, architectural designs and creative elements that stimulate the senses, I realize it brings much joy to me and to others. On the other hand, there's a big part of each day that's dedicated to the matter of doing business. Unfortunately, in many of these hours I've encountered unwelcome business engagements rife with conversations that were tired, cold and unemotional, often void of the pleasant sensations found in art.

It's as if there are two separate worlds; the world of art that's loaded with beauty and fascination and the world of business, filled with mundane processes and emotionless transactions. The latter occupies much of the day, but for many, these are the hours they can hardly wait to escape from.

I wondered, what if there was a way to weave artistry into business and generate both greater pleasure and increased productivity. So, I experimented with integrating creative literary elements into business writings, creative expression into my business attire and artistic design and photographic elements into marketing communications. In adopting this creative approach, I increased my enjoyment while engaging with my clients and interestingly enough, my clients enjoyed interacting with me more. The result? We built stronger relationships and did more business together.

What a concept!

We've heard it said that people like to do business with people they know, like and trust. It's also true that it includes people they enjoy being around. So that bodes the question, "What can you do to be liked more by more people, to be trusted more by more people, so that more people would choose to do business with you?" Would it be helpful if you were the person who was putting in the effort to make their experiences and outcomes incredibly enjoyable?"

Therein are the root causes of my desire to embed beauty into the world of business.

In doing so, people would have enjoyment and pleasure brought to them. Then they wouldn't have to transport themselves to a distant and potentially costly place for that enjoyment. Instead, they would have it brought to them through the business interactions and creative exchanges that would not only give them the very best in outcomes, but the very best in experiences.
