Learn From Your Personal Heroes

Recently, I couldn’t help but be reminded of how much adopting a positive attitude can make a difference in your life. Though I encounter them every day, here’s one that is now top of mind. I had called my dad as he celebrated his 89th birthday.

I said, “Happy Birthday, Dad.” To which he replied, “Thank you, thank you” I went on to recall a thought that had entered my mind that morning and that I wanted to share with him. “Dad,” I continued. “I want to let you know that you are an incredible hero of mine.” Again, he simply replied “thank you.” I continued by saying, “As I was getting ready to make this call it occurred to me that over the course of my life I’ve not heard you complain." “And from my perspective, you’ve had good reasons to complain. Dad, I wake up some days and have aches and pains and as I go out for my daily walks, sometimes a part of me wants to quit and feel sorry for myself. And there you are at 89, and I know you experience aches and pains that are much more acute than mine, but I never hear you complain about any of them.” “Why should I?” he responded. “Well, here I am as an adult, formally educated and prepared well to take on life and accomplish much. And I have you and mom both alive and always there, still always ready to support me even though life has been so tough for you both. I cannot imagine what it would have been like to have been you, to have lost both your parents by age 11 and have to bounce around from home to home, living with older siblings.” “You know, I never looked at it that way,” he replied. “I’ve always thought that I was very fortunate. Because at least I had people to take care of me when there were so many others who didn’t." “That’s exactly my point,” I said. “You have a way of being thankful and looking at the bright side.” And to that he replied, “How else should I look at it? Whenever we think it's bad, there are always those who are worse off." That statement reinforces the hero that he is to me. And to so many others. To approach life with such optimism and gratitude in the face of adversity, is what I consider incredibly heroic. Too often we turn to the media for our heroes. While they can also serve as inspiration in our lives, we cannot forget the heroes that surround and uplift us each and every day. It is with great reverence that I urge you to seek to find and learn from your personal heroes on a daily basis. They are in your midst and nearby. Look to them for inspiration and motivation, and even clarity. Extract from their personal stories and experiences what you need to be successful in your own career and life. But just as important as learning from them is expressing your gratitude for them. Today provides a wonderful opportunity for you to learn from your personal heroes.
