A Balancing Act

One of the biggest challenges you will face in pursuit of your interests and passions and using your greatest skills, is determining how to balance enjoying what you love to do with what you need to do. Doing the things you love that bring exhilaration on the one hand into balance with the things required to be done but don’t always fire you up—those things you don’t enjoy or sometimes even despise.

It starts with recognizing how critical the task is for achieving your goals. If the goals and dreams are large and meaningful enough, then some say the tasks don’t matter. You steel yourself to do the tasks that are necessary and only for as long as necessary. You quickly and consistently ask the question, "how do I extricate myself from doing the things I don’t like"

That is a question that provokes thinking, planning, and creative problem solving. It invites you to also ask this question of others or do the research to ultimately discover how you might be relieved from doing these things you don’t like. Quite often, the solution lies in a willingness to forego some financial resources and pay to have them done by someone else. Or even looking around your network and asking for help.

Securing help doesn’t always require a financial exchange but rather, may provide someone an opportunity to learn and grow in an area of strength for them, one that is not a strength of yours. These are just two examples of how you can outsource an area of work or a task that doesn’t fulfill you, or fall in your sphere of expertise, interest, or passion. But it still ensures the task gets done. More importantly, it advances your efforts toward delivering irresistible service and accelerates attainment of your goal .

In a word, the quest is to spend more time doing the things you love and enjoy, and less time doing the things you are not skilled in, enjoy, are interested in, or passionate about. The key is recognizing what things must be done and finding a way to get them done so you open more space for what you love. When you do not have alternative sources of assistance, then you must affirm to yourself that you will do these tasks for only as long as you must. Affirm you will continue to look for help, somewhere, somehow in those areas that are relevant to your goals and dreams. Then when you find help, you’ll put plans together to employ them in doing the things you don’t enjoy.

It’s a balancing act. One that needs to be constantly considered and attended to, so you don’t make the mistake of wasting time and energy on “tasks” versus dreams. Your time is a precious commodity.

Balance it wisely.
